The Wish List

I woke up the other night with my mind racing. I had a jumble of thoughts I couldn’t make sense of because it was 3:30am and I was more than a little groggy. I suppose that’s how I pick what I write about. Most of the time inspiration strikes when I’m sleeping. The ideas are born somewhere in my subconscious and that fact alone makes them worthy to me to write about and share. I have an entire list of topics to blab about, but it has to be the right topic at the right time.

This time of year can bring out the best and worst in people. I personally have never cared for Christmas lists because I believe they set a strange tone for the holiday. I love to gift other people and while guidance is sometimes nice, I much prefer to take a little bit of time to locate something that is wonderfully fitting for someone special. To me, a gift is something I see that makes me think of a particular person.

As a gal who aims to please, here’s my kick at a wish list. Some of these wishes have been years in the making and as everything does, it’s ever changing.

~ An extra half inch of tape when you’re wrapping that final gift.
~ A bottomless bottle of delicious Prosecco. Some days you just need a little help.
~ Free shipping on online orders in Canada too. The US gets free continental shipping all the time and I know this because I get these awesome emails full of great deals. So I go through the process of shopping on a website only to get to the checkout and realize that the free shipping special only applies to the US. Not cool.
~ Shorter lines everywhere.
~ Heated roads and sidewalks so the snow removal problem solves itself. And people might even be able to not freak out driving the streets when we are graced with another big dump of the cold white stuff.
~ People to buy vehicles they know how to park and drive. I think this one is self-explanatory.
~ Speaking of cars, a mandatory road test at license renewal time would be fab.
~ The inability for anyone to lie. Ever. Especially when you’re trying to find out which one of the kids ate the last cookie you were saving to eat once they were in bed.
~ Invisibility powers. For necessity’s sake.
~ The banishment of caller ID. If your phone rings, answer it.
~ A way to show people that the “right time” doesn’t exist for anything. Tomorrow is not promised so stop putting off all the things you say you’ll do when the timing is right. Take a chance. Do it now. I promise there will never be a better time.
~ The ability to see yourself through the eyes of another. It would crush any self doubt or fear of inadequacy that you’ve ever possessed.
~ For people to speak less and listen more.
~ A dog that can ring a bell when she needs to go out. I hate cleaning up dog poop. And stepping in it.
~ To be able to hear the inner voice of others. You truly have no idea the battles other people are fighting. Approach with love and kindness always. Unless you’re a mind reader in which case you need to teach me how.
~ More kind people. Most people could use a hand up, not a hand out.
~ A way to travel the world without flying. I’m not a fan of being on planes. I need to be heavily medicated. And to those that have sat next to me on a plane when I am medicated, you’re welcome. To those I’ve sat beside without my sedatives, yes I do need both arm rests to dig my nails into. It’s either going to be the armrest or your arm. Your choice.
~ Christmas tree balls that don’t shatter into a million pieces when they’re dropped. Or thrown.
~ Pre-lit Christmas tree lights that never burn out.
~ Neighbors that take down their Christmas lights when Christmas is over. Please.
~ A universal understanding that words can hurt.
~ Snow days. I know there are places all over the world that get snow days. Where I come from, there can be a blizzard raging with a -40 degree Celsius temperature rating and nothing shuts down. Not even the school buses. We’re all like, “Time for those winter tires, hey?”
~ The ability to pee alone. With the door shut and no interruptions.
~ Batteries to be included.
~ To be able to drink an entire cup of tea/coffee while it’s still hot. And not re-warmed because you find it in the microwave the next day.
~ A lunch once in a while I can eat while seated that doesn’t consist of toddler-rejected items.
~ To break the habit of pre-cutting my own food before I eat.
~ Honesty without guilt. This doesn’t mean that you blurt out whatever comes to mind. If you have a tough message to deliver, do it with love and kindness.
~ Free perogies. All the time. Forever.
~ Basic necessities for everyone, everywhere. Water, food, clothing, shelter, education.
~ Less autocorrect, more spelling tests.
~ Windshield wipers that actually do their job when it gets snowy, blowy and icy.
~ Universal acceptance. Don’t judge because you don’t understand.
~ A chance to have one last conversation with the people that have moved on to their next life.

Yep. That’s it. Some are simple, others beyond any doing. Funny how that happens. The things we want most are the hardest to stretch for or the ones we just can’t have. At the end of the day, the difference between a wish and goal is action. Take action on your wishes and watch life as you know it blossom.

I wish you love, light, happiness and all the beauty this world has to offer. And if the crazy gets to be too much, find a closet to hide in and big glass of something you enjoy.

From this house to yours, I wish you the merriest Christmas.
